Medina 2015 – Day 1

Let’s face it – anyone with an ounce of sanity knows 5 a.m. is too early to move let alone prepare for a trip across the county.

In that case, we must be insane because this morning 27 of your favorite Woodmont teens set out for an epic journey to Medina, Texas. After donning our slick mission trip t-shirts, snapping group photos, and hugging our families goodbye, we marched into an air traveler’s worse nightmare: security. (Tip from Brett Birdwell: always remember to leave your pocketknife at home when you head to the airport.)

Eventually we boarded a plane but not before experiencing a half-hour delay and a quick visit to Starbucks. (Kudos to Danny and Lexis for surviving their first flight.) Upon arriving in San Antonio, we began our quest for lunch at the local mall’s food court. Atlas, we were broken-hearted when we realized Chick-Fil-A was closed. You’d think the Lord’s house would be open on Sunday…

Despite this tragedy, out spirits were strengthened by a hearty meal, after which we piled into vans and cars bound for Medina Children’s Home. For almost two hours we traveled over winding mountain roads, driving deeper into the country and farther from our precious cell service. Once we got settled in we received some brief safety instructions – specifically, “Don’t befriend any spiders, snakes, scorpions, wild boars, armadillos, or skunks.

Finally, we shared our hopes and fears for the week with each other. Though we still aren’t sure what hard work we’ll be doing, we can already tell God has a fantastic adventure in store for us. The Medina team is beyond excited to connect with the people here and reconnect with each other and we can’t wait to find out what the Lord’s got planned for the days ahead. (All signs indicate we might turn into Texas toast before the trip is over.)

More updates from the Lone Star State to come!

Love and blessings,
