Mission Albany Backpack Drive

Beginning June 16th, The Bridge Middle School Ministry will be collecting backpacks full of school supplies for the students we are going to serve in Albany, Georgia this summer.

MissionChange.com

Click to visit Mission Change’s website.

Mission Change, the organization we will be working alongside June 30th-July 5th, is currently collecting backpacks and school supplies for the families they work with. So, we’re calling on our families with middle schoolers to help us provide this blessing to the people we’re going to meet in Albany. This is a great way to participate in our mission even if you’re unable to travel with us.

Here’s what we need:

1 Backpack (to be used by children in Pre-K through 5th or 6th grade.) containing the following…

  • 1 Pack of Crayons, colored pencils, or markers*
  • 1 Pack of #2 pencils
  • 1 Glue stick
  • 1 Pack of wide-ruled notebook paper (or) Kindergarten letter paper*
  • 1 Pair of safety scissors
  • 3 Three-pronged folders with pockets in Red, Yellow, or Blue

*If you choose a small child’s backpack, please tend towards items geared towards a younger child (i.e. Crayons rather than colored pencils, and Kindergarten paper rather than wide-ruled).

If you are unable to collect all these items, partial donations will also be accepted. However, we would like for all the backpacks to contain the same items, so please provide all items listed if possible.

On June 29th at 11:30am, we will be having a packing party with our Albany mission team where we will sort these bags and discuss the upcoming week. This meeting is mandatory, so please plan to be there.

Pre-IMPACT Party!

Our friends from Albany, Georgia will be joining us for IMPACT again this year, and they’re arriving this Thursday!

That means a couple things for us…

  1.  If you’re in middle school, come hang out with us at 5:30! We’ll play games, eat foods, and get to know our friends from Albany.
    • Girls: Please bring desserts or snacks
    • Guys: Please bring drinks
  2. If you’re going on the middle school mission trip, don’t miss this!  We’ll be seeing these people again this summer.
    • Parents of those going on the trip, stick around for the first 15 minutes or so to get a chance to hear from Tommy Johnson (youth minister at Westwood Church in Albany) about what we’ll be doing when we go down to their neck of the woods!

Hope you can all make it! If you or your student is going on the mission trip, but can’t be there, don’t worry, more information will be coming out in the next week or two.

We just spent 31 weeks studying a story about God loving and living with his people. Throughout The Story we emphasized how important it was to know that these are just the beginning 31 chapters and that God is still writing our story today. So for the Sundays in the summer we will have a different guest speaker who will come and tell us their story of how God has loved and lived with them. You will also get a chance to ask them questions about their stories and interact with each speaker.

Camp Telos 2013 Applications Now Up

TE1OS

Our theme this year is “1.” Download your applications now and turn them in ASAP.

Go to the “Forms” tab and its the first one on the top. Sign up before June 9th and the cost is $200, and $215 afterwards. The final day to sign up is June 30th.

Middle School Mission Deadline

Now that we have our results from the Pancake Breakfast fundraiser, I am pleased to announce an official deadline and price for our Middle School Mission trip to Albany, Georgia.

Applications will be due by May 19th along with a $100 deposit.*

The total cost of the trip will be $230 total (or $130 after the deposit). The incredible support shown at the Pancake Breakfast lowered the cost by $70 a person!

The full total will be due by June 23rd, and students are encouraged to raise money by writing letters to people that do not attend church at Woodmont (as to avoid overwhelming the same group of people with requests) or by any other means necessary, if they so choose.

All middle school students, 6th-8th grade, are encouraged to apply. If you’d like to know more about the nature of the trip, you can learn more here.

*If, for some reason, there is not room for a student, or they are not selected as a member of the team, this deposit will be refunded after May 19th.

Again, the new time for the Medina Informational meeting that, if you can, would be a really good idea for all teenagers and parents to attend, will be Wednesday, May 8th at Woodmont in the Teen Center at 5:00 pm.

Jesus Party Cancelled :(

cute-face-puppy-background-image-611591

Look at that puppy’s face! Look at how sad he looks. I could fill a swimming pool with my own tears if I looked at that puppy long enough. Do you know why that puppy is so sad? I do. But are you sure you want me to tell you?

Caution, if you are having a bad day and can’t take more bad news, or if you are having a very good day and don’t want it spoiled with bad news, you should immediately stop reading this post, put down your electronic device and go enjoy a lovely spring day. If you decide to proceed, I must warn you, this picture captures only a glimpse into the profound depths of this puppy’s sadness. It is a sadness so deep and comprehensive no single picture could do it justice.

This puppy is so sad because we are officially canceling the Jesus Party… (dramatic pause for profound shock and sadness)…

Ok, being serious, The Jesus Party is something I’ve done at churches when I lived in Georgia and Texas. The idea is to throw a party Jesus may want to attend. When Jesus talked about parties he told his followers to invite “last” kinds of people, people that don’t normally get invited to parties, because that’s the celebration that is going to look most like heaven. Well, we had such a party all lined and, for a long list of reasons all of which are no bodies fault (except maybe mine – Dave’s), things fell through.

As much as I was joking about the puppy, I am pretty bumbed out about it because Jesus Parties are some of the most fun I’ve ever had. But, for this year, it aint happening. We will put it on the calendar for next year and hope things work out better. So, go hug a puppy.

Workcamp Applications

OldWorkcampLogo

Hey everybody! It’s time to get your Nashville Workcamp applications in ASAP! The deadline to have your application is April 14th… That’s this Sunday! If money is an issue, we can take that later, or work out another plan, but we must have the application by this Sunday. Nashville Workcamp is always one of my favorite things in the summer and I want all of you to be able to experience God’s gift of losing yourself in serving others.

Go to the “Forms” tab at the top of this page, find the Workcamp link, print it off, fill it out, and turn it in.

“Taize,” pronounced “Tah-zeh”

480775748_68677409b0_oTomorrow night we will be worshipping with the rest of Woodmont in the Great Hall. This 1st Wednesday will be a Taize style worship service which is a little different than what you may be used to, but I wanted to teach you a little about it so you could come with an open mind.

Taize worship is named after a religious community in France in the city of Taize. After World War II a man named Brother Roger was disturbed by the grim new world where Christian brothers and sisters destroyed each other because their nationality was more important to them than their share religious beliefs. So he decided to establish a religious community that put worship of Christ and reconciliation of all people at the center of everything they did. To move away from the Nationalism that was at the heart of WWII (not to mention the newly discovered concentration camps) they needed to do things a little differently. They began writing their own music that they would often sing in multiple languages. The music also gave preference to songs with easily repeatable, almost chant-like, refrains that focused on a very specific aspect of spirituality. This kind of music facilitated 1) the ability for people from different countries and languages to worship together and, 2) the unified focus on a shared belief in Jesus Christ while de-emphasizing national differences.

As you may be able to tell, I kind of dig it. I’d ask that you come and give it a try. It won’t be for everyone, and if it’s not for you it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. However, you might also dig it and you’ll never know until you try.

- David

Holy Week Schedule and Updates

Hey family!

As you know, this is Holy Week, so here’s a couple notes on what’s going on with Woodmont this week.

  • Join us on Wednesday night for our regularly scheduled class time at 6:30pm where we will worship together and dive into the story of Jesus.
  • Friday at 7pm, we’ll be having a family-wide Good Friday service. I fully agree with Dean’s sentiment that commemorating Good Friday has completely transformed my celebration of Easter. I hope you’ll all be able to join us for this time of somber reflection on Jesus’s last hours.
  • There will be no youth classes on Easter Sunday at 9am. We are encouraging all families who usually attend the 10:30 service together to do so on Sunday. The 9am service has a tendency to be overcrowded, and we want to make sure we have open seats at the table for our guests. Help us be good hosts by greeting people you don’t know and creating as much space in the Great Hall as possible.
