Medina Day 5 (Yes, Medina)

Hello Woodmont! Well, today didn’t turn out quite like we had planned due to some bus trouble, so the teens didn’t get their surprise, but I know that they enjoyed returning to Arms of Hope to hang with the kids for one more day unexpectedly, especially since they had already said their goodbyes! That was surprise enough. I definitely think there was a reason we returned to Medina for an extra day, and I’m glad we did.

An Update on Travel: Tonight, we will be picked up by a new driver around 10:00 PM, and we will make a three hour drive to Waco, Texas, where we will be staying at the Deerfield Inn for the night before heading back to Nashville in the morning. We plan to be back in Nashville around 9:00 PM tomorrow night, but we will make sure we update you to let you know where we are.

Medina Day 4

Hey Woodmont! Today was our last official day here in Medina, Texas, and tomorrow we’ll be getting up bright and early to head on to our Surprise Day, an event that still remains unknown to the youth. David, Betsy, and the interns have kept the secret pretty well! Everyone’s packing for the quick morning departure we’ll be making, and even though we are sad that we have to leave Medina, we know that our mission isn’t ending simply because we’re leaving here.

Today we witnessed God in a lot of places. Betsy was incredible today as she took the reins on planning our Fun Day, making sure that our youth group was involved in helping to make it the best and most creative night possible. We had a doughnut eating contest, where the kids had to reach up and bite powdered doughnuts off a string; there was a lot of screaming and cheering for who could eat the fastest. A mighty game of kickball was played and some water balloons were thrown too— mostly at David— and we finished the night out with a dance party and root beer floats. We said our goodbyes, wrote some letters to those we made connections with, and finally, we sat down as a group to reflect upon the week and the things we experienced in this beautiful place.

Worship tonight was incredible. Leah and Duncan led “How He Loves”, “Revelation Song”, “I Ask You For Life”, and “Psalm 13”. How loud and sincere the teens were during parts of the songs just blew me away. I know that they were truly worshipping God, not just singing to end the night. We saw Jesus today in the incredible work Woodmont accomplished— hauling trailer upon trailer of fifty pound boxes of tiles (human assembly line included), organizing all of the clothing in the store and commissary, and cooking an amazing meal of fajitas, guacamole, and watermelon for two hundred people. But most of all, we saw God in the relationships we formed this week. It made me realize just how little we are, and how huge God is, because only He could have brought us as close as He has in such a small amount of time; this includes forming relationships with the Arms of Hope teenagers as well. We can’t mention enough just how much closer the group of us who came to Medina has become, and we look forward to bringing it back to Nashville and spreading it to the rest of the youth group.

Also, a final word for the night: as we were closing out our devotional tonight, Jared Miller, a former youth group member at Woodmont, told us that he had heard from all of the kids he’d talked to that we had won the “favorite award” for those who had come to Arms of Hope this summer.

Please pray for our safe travels over the next two days! We loved this year so much and can’t wait to see you again on Saturday!

Medina Day 3

Hey Woodmont! Today in Medina we finished up on sorting and counting items at the commissary, which we’ve heard is a huge blessing on the people who work in the store here at Arms of Hope. We counted 900,000 diapers, over 1,000 pencils and crayons, an insane amount of canned goods, and much, much more before working over in the store. We had an incredible lunch of “Build Your Own Burgers” that included guacamole, five different kinds of cheeses, mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, and tons of other yummy toppings. We attended Kerrville Church of Christ tonight and watched the kids who attend there participate in VBS activities that they’d been practicing all week. It included some of the teenagers from Arms of Hope, so it was nice to see some familiar faces!

There has been some incredible teamwork going on here in Texas, and it’s been so evident as I’ve watched our youth group help one another sweep up mass amounts of dust and nails, spend hours calculating how much soup is in an immeasurable amount of cans, and grow seriously closer together throughout this week. It’s really tedious work that we’re doing here, but we know that we’ve been inspired to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and I’m proud to say that that’s exactly what we’re showing, and for the right reasons too. God has been ever present during our time here in Medina, and we look forward to sharing some awesome stories when we get back to Nashville! Tomorrow is our last work day and will include fajita night and Fun Night, where we’ll be playing with the kids and teens to close out the week. We’ll update you again tomorrow! Please continue to keep us in your prayers!

Medina Day 2

Hey guys! We had an awesome day today!

We awoke around 7 AM for breakfast before splitting up into our work crews for the day. We cleaned out storage closets, demolished sheet rock, knocked nails into wood, washed and stacked tons of dishes, took inventory at the commissary, and hauled loads of food items and diapers as our main jobs across Medina’s campus today. We were served some authentic, incredible Mexican food for lunch, and we had breakfast for dinner tonight. We saw some baby deer, some of us climbed a mountain and watched the sunset, and we connected even further with the kids here in Medina. We saw God in the beautiful nature He blessed us with today, in us as a youth group growing so much closer together, and in the people here who are so gracious and kind to us. God was doing some incredible things here in Medina before we even got here. We’re so excited to see the things He will do when we’re here, and then even further, to hear the stories of what He does long after we’ve left.

Keep us in your prayers as we continue our mission here in Texas!

Medina Day 1

It’s been more than 30 hours since we left Nashville.

We’ve gone through three state capitals.

We’ve driven almost exactly 1,000 miles.

We’ve caught up with old friends and made some new ones.

We’ve climbed to the top of large hills, played basketball, thrown frisbees and laughed a lot.

The people here have invited us into their homes, fed us dinner, and told us their stories. We heard about brokeness and redemption; pain and healing.

Tomorrow we get started on what some might call “the real work,” where we will help take inventory in the campus’ commissary and help demolish an aging cottage.  However, it strikes me that the real work has already begun. In fact, the real work was happening before we even got here. We have dropped in on this campus and been caught up in the whirlwind of God’s redemptive activity. Tomorrow we will be doing hard work and we’ll need your prayers. But it will be just one more way that we get to witness God’s grace here in Medina.

Tell Your Friends to Follow

If you’ve ever wondered why on earth you would ever follow your youth group’s blog, just ask Anna Lasley and Reese Gwin who have each one a $25 gift card to iTunes and Chili’s respectively.

When asked for comment on how it felt to win $25 from his youth group, Reese responded “Looks like I’ve got money for a  hott date!! If only I had a hott date…darn.” Reese then bench pressed 33 reps of 225 lbs. and felt better about the world.

Even though young Mr. Gwin doesn’t have a lady friend to take to Chili’s with him, he is 25 Chili’s bucks richer, all because he follows us @WoodmontYG. What’s the moral of the story? It’s that you too could win awesome prizes and just generally be plugged into what’s going on at WoodmonYG if you follow us here at the blog or over at Twitter, or both!

The winner of today’s prize will not only need to follow us here at the blog, you will also need to come to church tonight to know the answer to the trivia question… see you tonight!

College Co-Counselor Applications

Are you a college age student who would like to help out at Camp Telos this year? If so, go to our “forms” page find the “2012 counselor application” form, print it out and put it in the black mail box at church. Or, if you’re tech savvy enough, download it, edit it with your information and email it to vphipps@woodmont.org. We will have a selection process that involves a group of people with Camp’s best interest at heart.
Camp’s going to be so great this year!
