No Class Wednesday – Workcamp Worship

Hello all,

We will not be meeting for class next Wednesday, the 13th, due to Nashville Workcamp.

However, if you would like to join us at Workcamp worship at the West End Church of Christ, it will begin at 7:00pm in their sanctuary. Our dear friend and intern, Reid Hillin will be delivering the devotional thought that night as well!

Be ready for Wednesday, June 13th though, because it’s gonna be awesome! The praise band will be joining us, and we’ll be officially launching into our summer series.

Love you guys!

Peace,
Jesse

RAVE Daughters Tour

Girls, join Lindsey and Carly Sunday night, June 10th, for an amazing night of worship, testimonies, and spoken word poetry as RAVE ministries’ Daughters Tour comes to Nashville.  We will meet at church and carpool to Rocktown together.  It will be $5 at the door.  We are also in need of women who would be willing to drive; so, if you can please let us know! Please RSVP by e-mailing Carly at ckendric@harding.edu.

This Sunday

This Sunday we will finish, at least temporarily, the “Resurrection People” series we’ve been working through as we pause and let the interns take some ownership over our study on Sundays.

One thing I would like to do is start discussing what we think God is teaching us as a Youth Ministry and I can’t think of an easier way to do it than this shiny new website we have. As I was studying for this Sunday, the song above kept coming to my mind and I’d love for you guys to listen to it and tell me what you think about the lyrics by commenting on this post.

The artist is a guy named “Matisyahu” he is a Hassidic Jew (which just means he follows the Old Testament cleanliness laws very closely) who makes Reggae music.

So watch the video and tell me what you think.

Dream Team! – Summer 2012

Pictured: Reid Hillin, David Sessions, Carly Kendrick, Lindsey Bell, Chet Butterworth, and Jesse Baker

We’re so excited to be working with four of the coolest people in the world this summer!

After many of you got to meet them last Wednesday, we left straight from church and spent a couple days getting to know each other out on the Buffalo River. David and I can’t wait for you to get to know them too.

Not only are the funny, fun to be around, and easy to talk to, they each love the Lord deeply and long to know Him more. I trust that love will be contagious as they walk with us these next few months. So, seek them out. They’re all pumped to meet you, and they’ve already started putting their heads together to dream up some great stuff for this summer.

Join us again this Wednesday to get to know these guys better and to officially kick off the summer!

Medina Deadline Coming Up

The deadline to turn in forms for Medina is this Sunday!

The people at Arms of Hope have asked us to bring at least 20 people but no more than 45 including adults. Right now we have 16 including adults. Now I don’t think they’ll turn us away with 16 but it would really help our planning process if everyone who is planning on going would submit their forms. If you haven’t already done so, go to the “forms” section of this website and print off a “high school mission trip form.” There is one form to apply for both high school mission trips this summer. We ask you to rank your preference of trips but if there is one you absolutely don’t want to or can’t go on, just put an “X” next to it.

I’m really excited about our trip this year. I have been talking some with their director of volunteers and I can tell you that the people there are equally excited to see you guys.

Peace
Dave

Intern Ice Cream Party!

Clockwise: Carly, Chet, Lindsey, and Reid

Summer is here, and, this Wednesday, our interns will be too! Help us welcome them by joining us in the small courtyard (between the ‘white house’ and the church building) for an Intern Ice Cream Party at 6:00pm.

We believe that the Lord has provided us with four incredible young people to help lead our youth group this summer, and we want to celebrate their arrival accordingly!

Please bring $2 for ice cream, and feel free to come hang out even if you don’t want any. The interns will be leading class at 6:30.

We are Woodmont, and we are…

Who are we?

One of the great things about our church is its emphasis on Family.

At some point in our history, we decided not to just be “Woodmont Hills Church of Christ.” Instead, the idea of family was considered so important that it needed to be on the sign, making us “The Family of God at Woodmont Hills: A Church of Christ” to this day.

Now, that could be the longest church name in Nashville, but I love the heart of it.

“We are Woodmont, and we are family. And family sticks together.”

Why does it matter?

You’ve probably heard me say before that I don’t want to serve our youth ministry under some veil of mystery. I don’t want the decisions we make or the changes that occur to seem pointless, thoughtless, or disrespectful to the traditions of the church. Therefore, during our season of change, I wanted to take some time to write about one of the major catalysts behind the changes in our ministry and our church. Because I know change is difficult and sometimes confusing… if anybody knows that firsthand, it’s a teenager!

So anyway… back to family… We want to be about family. Not just as a church, but also as a youth ministry. This means we want to think outside of ourselves to reach out and bless the rest of our congregation. Trust me, they need and want it more than you can imagine!

We want to be intergenerational. What does that mean? Simply put: Family.

Churches around the world are starting to realize they haven’t done family very well. Small churches and large churches alike, we’re starting to realize that we need to start changing the way we do things if we’re really going to make disciples of Jesus.

The article I linked above gives three good reasons for intergenerational church:

It removes the temptation of “church within a church.”
A completely segregated youth ministry has to constantly battle the “church within a church” battle—a teenager might be having a completely different experience then their parents week in and week out—so when youth group is gone they feel little or no connection to the actual “church.”

It makes the transition to “big church” much easier.
The handoff from any ministry to the next is always difficult; developing some forms of intergenerational worship will help ease students’ transition to the adult service environment. It will be less of a leap and more of a step.

It could help reduce the number of students leaving the faith after high school.
This is the primary driving force behind intergenerational ministry. When teenagers feel like they’re part of the whole church body “all along,” it’s less likely they’ll wander than if they’re expected to feel like part of the church body “all of a sudden” when they graduate youth group.

Just ask your buddies who have gone off to college… it can be really weird to return to a church when you’re no longer in the youth group and you’ve never really been a part of the rest of the church.

Our mission is to not make teenage disciples of Jesus, it’s to make lifelong disciples of Jesus. We feel that being intergenerational is essential in that process.
Just like anything else, being a disciple takes practice, and we want to give our teens the opportunity to practice discipleship along with the older members of the church who have walked many of the same roads already and have wisdom to offer for the journey.

How do we get there?

As David announced this Sunday, a few things are going to be changing throughout the course of the summer and fall. Most, if not all, of these changes are taking place in order to bring our church family together.

Sunday mornings are going to be more about teaching, experiential worship, and being together with the  larger family at Woodmont. They will look less like a full worship service, because we believe having that on Sunday mornings is one of the primary contributing factors to the “church-within-a-church” culture at Woodmont.

We still want you to be in class, of course, but we really want you to join us in the second service to worship with the rest of the congregation. We also want you to serve in second service (serving communion, on the praise team, leading prayers, etc).
We’re going to find a spot where we can all sit together. So we’ll still be together, but we’ll be together with the rest of our church, too.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “What about the praise band? Our worship is one of the best things about this youth group!”  Trust me, David and I agree with you! And that’s why the praise band isn’t going away. Instead, we’re going to try to really invest in making Wednesday nights an incredible time for youth group worship.

Life Groups will still be around too, but they will also be taking place at a different time in the fall. For the summer, however, we’re going to bless the LifeGuards by giving them a sabbath from volunteering weekly. They deserve it!
Of course, they can choose to be around as much as they’d like to. Many of them will still attend camp and host Life Group events, but we want summer to be the time when LifeGuards can fill their own cups so they have even more to pour into their Life Groups during the school year.

To be clear, this is not a “polite” way of phasing-out LifeGuards. They will be back. We will continue having Life Groups. Small groups are an essential part of the backbone of this ministry, and we want to do everything we can to make them the best they can be.

David and I have noticed that our youth group has been trying to do a lot of great things in a very short amount of time. By squeezing worship, teaching, and life groups into an hour and a half on Sunday mornings, we don’t don’t give any of them the time or investment they deserve.
Spreading out these core elements will help make what is already a great youth program even stronger.

And family does what?

Family sticks together.

To me, this means two things right now.
1) We humbly ask that you bear with us and work with us towards creating the best possible youth group experience ever.
2) In order to truly be family, we have to sacrifice, serve, and grow together.

Hardly anybody likes change… that’s just the way we are. We like comfort and familiarity. Unfortunately, there isn’t always much room in comfort and familiarity for growth.

We believe God has called us to grow spiritually, and we want to be willing to follow him wherever that takes us.

We also believe that it takes work to be family.

Going to church events/youth group events doesn’t necessarily make anyone a “good Christian,” but strong, healthy families don’t become strong, healthy families by hanging out just once a week.

That is to say, we hope that you’ll be able to make Wednesday nights a priority in your weekly schedule. Those of you who have already can attest how much it can add to the richness of our relationships.

Some of you won’t be able to come every Wednesday night, and, trust me, that’s ok. We’re not trying to guilt anyone into feeling bad for missing church, but we’d love for you to join us.

So, if you’ve actually read all the way down to this sentence, thanks for reading. If you just skipped down here to see if it might get interesting, thanks for skimming. I hope you’ve found something helpful here, and I hope you know that David and I are always willing to chat with you about what’s going on in our ministry and our church. I am certain I’ve left things out of this, so I welcome any questions you may have.

Until then, I know I can speak for David when I say we are so incredibly thankful to work in such a great church. Thank you so much for your continuing prayer over this ministry and your dedication to making it all God desires it to be.

Peace and Grace,

Jesse

Nashville Workcamp Schedule and Info

We’re less than three weeks away from Nashville Workcamp! Can you believe it?!

What you will find below is just about everything you need to know if you, or your child, are attending Workcamp. Comment at the bottom to let us know if you have any additional questions.

Workcamp begins Sunday, June 3rd. Vans will be leaving from Woodmont at 3:30pm to West End Church of Christ where we will have crew meetings, get assignments, & worship God together to prepare us for the week ahead.

Monday-Thursday Schedule:

7:30 AM     Vans leave Woodmont for West End
8:00 AM      Morning Wake-UP
9:00 AM      Work at Sites
NOON         Lunch & Devo at Sites
3:00 PM      Return to West End
3:30 PM      Afternoon pick-up at Woodmont
(Students can stay during this break, but they need to make arrangements and bring soap, shampoo, change of clothes, etc. to shower at the building)
5:30 PM      Vans leave Woodmont for West End
6:00 PM      Evening Meal/Worship at West End
8:30 PM      Wrap Up/Go Home & Sleep!
9:00 PM
      Pick-up from Woodmont

Workcamp concludes at West End on Friday night, June 8th, with an informal banquet, media presentation, and a period of praise & thanksgiving.  We expect to conclude by 9:00pm on Friday night, so pick-up from Woodmont will be closer to 9:30.

Additional info:

  • Each student will be responsible for bringing his/her own 4″ paint brush, spray bottle, heavy duty paint scraper, and work gloves.
  • We will need to borrow ladders (step and extension) for the week, so if you have ladders we can borrow, please let us know.
  • Lunches are not provided and need to be packed for each day. Put the lunch in a plastic bag with the camper’s name on it, because lunches will be kept on ice in coolers along with the other members of the crew. (Often, crew leaders will plan to go somewhere to eat lunch one day during the week. Make sure your camper lets you know about this, so you can send money instead of a lunch.)
  • Campers will get paint on their clothes, plan accordingly.
  • Campers must wear closed-toe shoes, no exceptions.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • During the afternoon break, we encourage families who live close and are able to pick up their campers to do so. Showers are limited at the building, and clean-up will be much quicker if campers are able to go home.
  • Campers that are not picked up in the afternoon will be supervised, but they will need to make arrangements to bring soap, shampoo, towel, change of clothes, etc. at the beginning of the day.
  • Nightly dinners at West End are included in the cost.
  • Crews consist of teens from various youth groups from around the region. Crew assignments are more-or-less randomly generated to create diversity. This provides a wonderful opportunity to make connections with teens outside of our youth group.
  • Each crew will have around 10-20 campers and two or three crew leaders. There are also “sector leaders” that check in with crews throughout the day.
  • We are excited to be taking 30 students to Workcamp. David, Jesse, and the four interns will all be participating as crew leaders.
  • If special arrangements need to be made to pick up or drop off a camper from their work site, be sure your camper gets their crew leaders’ contact information. They will receive the address of their work site along with their crew assignments on Sunday night.

Again, please comment below if you have any additional questions. Thank you!

Oops

Ok so those of you who have already went to the “forms” page and printed off a camp application, good for you! But I messed up and left off an important part of the form. This year we are asking students to choose whether they want to do sports or crafts during organized sports and crafts time. You will still be able to participate in either during a free time we will have either day, but we need to know which you would rather do to organize things before we leave. I’ve gone back and uploaded a corrected application so if you haven’t filled one out yet, please be sure to indicate which you prefer. If you’ve already filled one out and don’t want to redo, no problem, just write on the front, “Sports” or “Crafts” and we can figure it out.

If you haven’t filled one out yet, well, what are you waiting for? Camp’s going to be awesome this year!

Love you guys, Dave

Camp Applications are Here!

Camp is officially renamed Camp Telos. Telos is a Greek word that has tons of meaning… but we’ll talk about that later. Go to the “Forms” section and download your application now! The due date is May 27th and the cost is $205 (but if you need to talk to us about scholarships, please do because we never want money to be a reason someone doesn’t get to go to camp).
